Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate Recipe
If you're into iced black coffee like me (it's summer all year long here in Jakarta, but when it's not it's flooded season) and you don't mind making your own coffee, you should try this Cold Brew Concentrate recipe..
First of all, you need to know your coffee preferences. Do you like it bold body, or light - fruity - winey kind of coffee? Because that will determines the coffee beans you'll use.
If you like it bold or you might add milk with it later on, I'd suggest use Robusta, medium to dark roast. But if you like something light and winey, use Arabica coffee beans, medium roast. I don't suggest the light roast for this method, is because there's a potential you'll get a grassy smell in the coffee later on, and you don't want that. Get a coffee beans that has been rested for 5 to 7 days after the roasting date, but not yet a month old.
This is what you'll need :
Ground Coffees
Water
Jug / Bottle
Coffee Filter
Now after you decided the coffee beans that you'll use. Let's grind it, medium coarse. Or you can ask the coffee shop / supplier to grind the coffee first when you bought it. Put all the ground coffee to the jug / bottle that you prepared earlier, then add water. Usually I use 250 gr ground coffees to 1000 ml cold (or room temperature) water. That ratio works for me, but you can use 1 : 3 ratio if you want it to be thicker / stronger. Make sure that you stir the coffee evenly, put the lid on, and keep it in the fridge. Let it sit for 18 to 24 hours in the fridge before pour it all on the coffee filter to get rid of the ground coffee. After you filtered it, you can keep it in the fridge for 5 to 7 days, and just pour it every time you need some refreshing caffeine kick at home. Don't forget to add water (or milk) before you drink it, because it's a concentrate. And cold brew coffee contains more caffeine than your everyday espresso, especially if you decided to use robusta there.
My personal favorite coffee beans for the cold brew concentrate is single origin coffee beans from Garut, West Java. It's fruity, winey, smokey, it's everything I love. So that's the cold brew concentrate recipe from me, hope that you like it, or you can make it in a large batch and sell it ;)
